Chip tuning modules to increase the power of the BMW 525d
The acronym 25d on the BMW 5 Series has often changed meaning over the years. With reference to models produced since 2000, we find several 525d, all turbo diesel, but with profound differences in the engine. Let's have a look at the main engines that this acronym indicates.
525d E39 163hp Chip Tuners
This was the first BMW 2500 6-cylinder engine with a common-rail and a variable geometry turbocharger. It has a capacity of 163 hp expressed at 4000 rpm and a maximum torque of 350 Nm expressed at 2000 rpm. With these values, the 5 Series is able (depending on the equipment and the bodywork) to accelerate from 0 to 100Km/h in less than 9 seconds with a maximum speed of about 220Km/h. The chip tuning additional module for this 525d acts both on the fuel injection system and on the turbo pressure, the increase in power is more than +30hp, and the maximum torque can increase up to over 60Nm.
525d E60/61 177hp Chip Tuners
This engine is already completely revised with respect to the previous one mounted on E39, and it features a DPF and has a different common rail injection system (more advanced), a different distribution tuning, and a different turbocharger. The power output is 177 hp at 4000 rpm, while the maximum torque is 400 Nm at 2000 rpm. With these values, the Series 5 E60/E61 is able (depending on the equipment and the body) to accelerate from 0 to 100Km/h in about 8 seconds with a maximum speed of 230Km/h. As you can see, the performance is much better, and the engine is much more responsive to driving than the previous unit. There is also a new type of transmission on the versions with automatic transmission, which is quicker in gear changes and has 6 gears: one more than the Steptronic of the E39. The additional CHIPBOX module ensures an increase in power of more than +30hp with an increase in maximum torque of 60/70Nm and excellent final performance.
525d 3.0 197hp Chip Tuners
This 525d mounts a reduced version of the 3-liter 6-cylinder engine with 24 valves. It has a power of 197 hp expressed at a speed of 4000 rpm, while the maximum torque, deliberately contained in 400 Nm is expressed in a very wide range, from 1300 rpm to 3250 rpm. This reduced 3000 makes the E60 Series 5 accelerate from zero to one hundred in about 7.5 seconds with a top speed of 235Km/h. The installation of the additional SELETRON module on this 525d 3.0 allows increases in power of +37 horsepower with an increase in maximum torque of 80Nm, values that allow this BMW to reach 250Km/h and cover the 0-100 in less than 7 seconds.
525d 2.0 218hp Chip Tuners
This 5 Series is fitted with BMW's first 2-liter common-rail with two-stage turbocharging. It uses a small turbocharger for low rpm and a large turbocharger for medium-high rpm. Under certain conditions, the turbines are both in operation, and the exhaust gas flows are controlled by the ECU, which diverts them appropriately on the two hot coils through pneumatic valves. This inline 4-cylinder has 218hp at 4400 rpm (a higher rpm than the 6-cylinder) and has a maximum torque of a good 450Nm. The 525d 218hp sedan accelerates from zero to one hundred in about 7 seconds and hits a top speed of just under 250Km/h. The installation of the SELETRON chip tuning unit on this twin-turbocharged 525d 2000 allows power increases of +27 horsepower with a maximum torque increase of 50Nm.
All BMW 525d chip tuning additional modules are easy to install and require no mechanical or electronic modifications. All BMW 525d upgrade kits are complete with wiring harnesses with connectors for quick installation/disassembly and connect to the injection and turbo pressure control systems. Below is a summary of the power and torque increases on the various versions of the 525d.
- 525d E39 163 hp chip tuning units increase of +30hp and +60Nm
