Maserati Ghibli Diesel: how it drives and how to tune it with chip tuning units.

Do you have a Maserati Ghibli Diesel? I'm happy for you! I like it, and very much so. How do you define this car? A luxury sedan? A thoroughbred sports car? A prestige car? In my opinion, it is all of these at the same time. In this case, behind the "trident" under the hood, there is a Diesel engine, a courageous choice by Maserati several years ago. To do so, Maserati opted for an Italian power unit, specifically from VM Motors. Are you familiar with VM Motors in Cento, Ferrara? You should be, also because the Turbotronic appeared among the very first electronically controlled diesels in the world. It was a 1990s 4-cylinder engine (also available with 5 and 6 cylinders) with a 2.5-liter displacement, two valves per cylinder moved by rods and rockers, modular heads, and a Bosch rotary injection pump with electronic control of the injection delivery and phase (indirect), fixed-geometry turbocharger, and air-to-air intercooler. This engine powered many cars, such as the Alfa Romeo 2.5td, Chrysler, Jeep, Rover (825sdi), and others. The engine had power outputs of 115-125hp depending on the tuning and the car on which it was installed. This was an important mark in the history of turbodiesels, and VM had considerable experience in this field. So Maserati's choice was understandable and, judging by the performance and feedback from this Ghibli, also apt.

 

 

The Maserati Ghibli 3.0V6 Engine

As mentioned, the Italian engine has a 6-cylinder 60° V architecture, unit displacement of about 500cc, four valves per cylinder, and turbocharging with a variable geometry turbocharger. The injection system is a refined common-rail. This engine delivers a whopping 600Nm of maximum torque. While the power depends on the version, the horsepower can be 275 (as we would like it to be), or there is the 250hp maximum power version created for supertax requirements. If it were not for the supertax, would the 250hp Ghibli Diesel exist? In my opinion, no, it would not make sense. Why take away 25 horsepower of oomph from the handsome Italian V6 when it was born to deliver this power and, as we will see in a moment, can deliver far more without problems? Nevertheless, that's what happened. So, if you, the reader, are a lucky owner of the 275hp Maserati Ghibli V6 Diesel, I am happy for you and recommend that you read to the end of this article. On the other hand, if you are a lucky owner of the 250hp Maserati Ghibli V6 Diesel, you should absolutely read to the end!

 

Maserati Ghibli V6 Diesel 250hp e 275hp Performance

How does this Ghibli powered by the V6 turbodiesel drive? It seems very well-performing. Of course, if you're coming from a 400/430hp indirect-injected naturally aspirated V8 or a newer turbo-petrol V6, you may miss the extra horsepower, the engaging sound of the Italian V8, or the thrust of the 530hp 3.8GTS, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the Ghibli drives well and is quite strong. The V6 Diesel engine has that robust 600Nm of torque (from 2000 rpm to 2600 rpm) that pushes the car's roughly 18 quintals nicely. By the way, the beautiful chassis, suspension, generous tires, and brakes make the car feel lighter as it handles so well and is firmly grounded. The 8-speed automatic transmission does its job well and allows the engine's torque curve to be exploited effectively. The Ghibli's (declared) top speed is 250Km/h for the more powerful version and 240Km for the 250hp version. The 0-100 acceleration is covered in 6.7 seconds and 6.3 seconds for the 275hp version. The delivery is pleasant, and the sound system that manages the exhaust system complements the emotional feeling of the driving pleasure of this Maserati.

 

How can you increase the power of the Maserati Ghibli V6 Diesel?

Not only is it possible to restore the original power of the Ghibli's Italian V6, but it is also possible to enhance the 275hp version with good electronic tuning that makes use of our CHIPBOX kit designed specifically for the Maserati turbodiesel. This is already a very impressive result, especially since the delivery of the tuned V6 makes it sharper than the more powerful standard version. But now it is precisely this version that we want to talk about, the Ghibli that already leaves the factory with 275hp! On this one, in fact, with the installation of the CHIPBOX chip tuning unit, the power output reaches 300hp with a maximum torque of 660Nm. These values make the already good standard performance even more exciting and engaging, with a 0-100 sprint that can be covered with times under 6 seconds and very fast revs. The drive with that nice self-locking differential dumps the 660Nm to the ground with very pleasant responsiveness.
